This is the Lord Howe woodhen, a species of flightless bird that is endemic to Lord Howe Island. They are an endangered bird and the island has worked really hard to protect and increase the population. In 1970 there were about 20 birds and now there are over 2,000 due to a program of rat eradication, and the removal of all cats & feral pigs.
You can see them wandering around everywhere on the island and they make lots of interesting sounds.
